Case Summary

The defendants were all attached to 64 Transport Column Royal Army Service Corps. They were said to have intended to remove from the Andaman islands all persons who were not 'useful', irrespective of age, sex or condition. Due to the food shortage and as part of their plan to cope with the situation, this removal plan was derived as a measure against food theft and to mitigate the food shortage problem. The defendants were accused of being completely indifferent to the fate of the civilians after their removal even if they did not positively intend them to starve. This included throwing some civilians overboard during the process of 'emigration', causing numerous people to drown.
